    Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

This Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice uses just four spices-cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice-for a warm, balanced blend that isn't dominated by cinnamon. I leave cloves out of the base recipe, but you can add a small pinch if you like their stronger flavor.

The recipe makes just 1¼ teaspoons, so you can mix enough for a single recipe without leaving another spice jar in the pantry. Or scale it up when you want a batch for fall baking.

I use this blend throughout my pumpkin recipes, including my popular Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer, Gluten-Free Pumpkin Bread, Almond Flour Pumpkin Muffins, and Gluten-Free Vegan Pumpkin Pie.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • The small batch is intentional. It makes 1¼ teaspoons-enough for many individual recipes-but scales up easily when you want a jar on hand.
    • It's less cinnamon-heavy. Cinnamon makes up 40% of this blend, leaving more room for the ginger, nutmeg, and allspice to come through.
    • No cloves are required. The four-spice base is flavorful without them; add a small pinch only if you like a stronger clove flavor.

    What is Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of warm ground spices used in pumpkin pie and other fall recipes. Most blends contain some combination of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.

My blend uses cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice, with cloves optional. You can use it anywhere a recipe calls for pumpkin pie spice, including pumpkin bread, muffins, pancakes, coffee drinks, and pie.

How to Use Pumpkin Pie Spice Instead of Individual Spices

You can also use this homemade blend 1:1 anywhere a recipe calls for store-bought pumpkin pie spice. Because pumpkin pie spice blends have different ratios, the exact flavor will vary slightly.

If a recipe calls for cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and/or cloves separately, add those measurements together and use the same total amount of pumpkin pie spice as a starting point.

For example, if a recipe calls for 1 teaspoon cinnamon + ½ teaspoon ginger + ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, use 1¾ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice.

How to make pumpkin pie spice

    Ingredients

You only need four ground spices:

    • Cinnamon
    • Ginger
    • Nutmeg
    • Allspice
    • Optional: cloves. I leave cloves out of the base blend because their flavor is much stronger, but you can add a small pinch if you like them.

See the recipe card for full quantities.

    Instructions

This recipe is truly as easy mixing everything together!

    1. Add each of the spices to a small bowl.
    2. Mix together well and store in a sealed jar in a cool dry place if not using immediately.

Hint: If making a big batch, I recommend using spices purchased around the same time so that they have similar expiration dates, and will last for 1-2 years.

    Most Important Tip

Check your spices before mixing. Ground spices lose flavor as they age, so smell each one before making the blend. If the aroma is weak or stale, replace it. For the most consistent shelf life, use spices purchased around the same time.

    Recipe FAQ's

How do you store leftover pumpkin pie spice?

Store any leftover pumpkin pie spice in an airtight container (like a small jar) in a cool dark place like the cupboard or pantry. This recipe will last as long as the individual spices' expiration dates, which is typically 1-2 years for dried ground spices.

Purchase new spices at the same time if you want this mix to last for more than one pumpkin spice season.

Is Mixed Spice the Same as Pumpkin Pie Spice?

Not exactly. British/Australian mixed spice is similar to pumpkin pie spice, but the spice ratios and ingredients can differ. If pumpkin pie spice isn't readily available where you live, making this four-spice blend will give you the closest result for recipes written specifically for pumpkin pie spice.

    Is pumpkin pie spice gluten-free?

This homemade pumpkin pie spice is naturally gluten-free as written. If you need to avoid gluten cross-contact, use individual spices that are labeled gluten-free.

    Ingredients

    • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
    • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice

    Instructions

    • Add each of the spices to a small bowl.
    • Mix together well and store in a sealed jar in a cool dry place if not using immediately.

    Notes

Using in recipes: Use this blend 1:1 anywhere a recipe calls for store-bought pumpkin pie spice. If a recipe lists cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and/or cloves separately, add those amounts together and use the same total amount of this blend as a starting point.
Cloves: This blend is made without ground cloves. If you like a stronger clove flavor, add a small pinch.
Scaling: To make a larger batch, keep the same 2:1:1:1 ratio of cinnamon to ginger, nutmeg, and allspice. Simply use full teaspoons or tablespoons with that ratio.
Storage: Store in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place. The blend will stay flavorful only as long as the individual spices remain fresh.
